Black crystal shards, both sharp and hard variants, are rare and exceedingly valuable drops in Black Desert Online. These shards are premium crafting components used in recipes and blueprints to enhance your character's gear.

Gathering

This is the most natural method of accruing both sharp and hard black crystal shards, as you'll need to gather resources throughout your adventures anyhow. But for this tactic to prove fruitful, you'll first need to level up your gathering skill.

How To Increase Gathering Speed

Optimally, you'll want your gathering stat up to level five to maximize your gathering speed. Of course, you could do this the old-fashioned way by dedicating a few play sessions solely to gathering and farming resources or you could skip the grind altogether.

Tip: The fastest way to level your gathering skill is to get in with a guild that offers a +3 gathering level perk. Then pick up a Life Spirit Stone. Your gathering level should now be at a base level of five, once you've equipped the stone.

You can obtain a Life Spirit Stone in the following ways:

• Purchase for 700,000 - 810,000 in the central market place
• Obtain from Monster drops from Polly's Forest and Navarn Steppe nodes in Kamasylvia.

If you are a solo adventurer, try dressing the part instead. Silver Embroidered Gatherer's Clothes grant +2 gathering level, and you can use consumables such as meals to raise your level the rest of the way.

Once at level five, grab the sharpest and most proficient tool you can get your hands on (Magic tools can aid your efforts, too.) and start gathering.

Note: At the maximum level and tool efficiency, gathering times should run roughly two to three seconds per animation.

The Best Materials To Gather

All resources have the same chance of dropping a black crystal shard, though many players claim wood is the most efficient source of farming the shards. Whether or not this is true, focusing on wood isn't a bad idea as wood is a constant necessity and tends to be the most profitable material to farm.

Best Areas For Farming Wood

• Southwest Calpheon forest
• South Velia forest
• Pilgrim's Haven

Note: Pilgrim's Haven offers the most bountiful lumber grounds, but you'll need to account for travel and therefore keep a closer eye on inventory weight, as you'll be far from any trading hubs.

Tip:You could set up a base for an alt character near Pilgrim's Haven to maximize your farming efficiency and thus your maximum yield.

AFK Gathering

If you've got more important things to attend to and wish to make some progress idly for a bit, then you can always set your character to the task of fetching water. So here's the step-by-step process to prepare for a trip to the river or spring.

1. Buy Empty Bottles from a Material Vendor.
2. Find a peacefulfresh body of water, safe from sudden monster attacks, and get in.
3. Right-click the Empty Bottle in your inventory.
4. Select the box that prompts you to repeat the process.

Note:This AFK method is flawed as the auto-gather cuts off every time you draw up a black crystal shard. Still, it allows you to focus on something else and bypass the redundant gathering process. Just remember to keep checking back every few minutes.

Tip:The top recommended location for AFK gathering is in the spring in the Heidel marketplace.

Hunter's Seal Rewards

Effective since this past summer (2020,) players can now get black crystal shards by earning Hunter's Seals. There are three ways to earn Hunter's Seals.

1. Boss Fights
2. Defeating Scrolls
3. Repeatable Quests

You can turn in these Hunter's Seals to Daphne DelLucci in the Balenos Forest, Southeast of Velia, to exchange the seals for shards.

Melting Accessories

Black crystal shards can also be gathered by melting down "blue accessories." Here's what you need to know about utilizing this method.

1. Only standard items can be melted down. Any enhanced (PRI) items won't work.
2. The item must be a minimum of 1 million silver in value to produce crystal shards.
3. Accessories generally yield one or two shards each.

Note: This method is costly and should only be utilized when obtaining shards is not an option elsewhere.
